Arnfinn Johnsen has during his 25-year career become one of the most
acclaimed photographers in Norway with over 100 awards in professional
competitions. He is voted Norwegian "Photographer Of The Year"
by the Professional Photographers of Norway, as well as being voted
Hedmark and Oppland county’s best photographer ten times.
Arnfinn Johnsen was born in 1958 in Senja in Troms. Working out of
his own studio in Hamar since 1992.
His best known project is “The gold club”, featuring
Norwegian Olympic gold medallists. Since 1992 he has been portraying
Norwegian athletes with Olympic gold in different. Close to 100 portraits
are now graceing the walls of the “Viking Ship” Olympic
arena in Hamar and the Norwegian Olympic Museum in Lillehammer. As
long as Norwegian athletes keep winning gold medals, and Johnsen can
hold his camera straight, new portraits will add to those already
present. These portraits can also be found in the book “The
Gold Club”, a part of the official cultural programme in the
Lillehammer Olympics.
Johnsen was voted Wedding photographer of the year by Mona Grudt,
editor of the bridal magazine “Your Wedding”, in 2000.
In 2002 he was commissioned to participate in Morten Krogvolds book,
“103 Moments”, a project presenting Norwegian portrait
photography. The same year Hasselblad bought one of his images to
use in their prestigious catalogue.
Johnsen has shown his work through six solo exhibitions, and 20 of
his photos could be seen in “Straight in the Face”, an
exhibition held at the Norwegian Museum of Photohraphy – Preus
Museum.
Arnfinn Johnsen gives something back by teaching photography to young
aspiring photographers in high school. He also lets people in on his
secrets through a number of workshops and courses held both in Norway
and around Europe.
He has received several scholarships from the Norwegian Professional
Photographers Fund, and is frequently used as a jury member in professional
photography competitions.
